Bengali to English Translation

1. দেশাত্মবোধ হল দেশের প্রতি ভালবাসা। এটি একটি শক্তিশালী এবং সম্পূর্ণ স্বার্থপরতাহীন ও মহৎ আবেগ। একজন দেশপ্রেমিক তার দেশের মঙ্গলের জন্য নিজের জীবন পর্যন্ত উৎসর্গ করতে পারেন। এটা এমন একটি আদর্শবাদ যা সাহস এবং শক্তি দেয়। কিন্তু মেকি দেশপ্রেম মানুষকে সংকীর্ণমনা এবং স্বার্থপর করে তোলে।

Patriotism is love for one's country. It is a powerful sentiment and wholly unselfish and noble. A patriot can sacrifice even his own life for the good of his country. It is idealism that gives courage and strength. But false patriotism makes a man narrow- minded and selfish.

2. খ্রিস্টের জন্মের প্রায় পাঁচশ বছর পূর্বে সক্রেটিস এথেন্সে বাস করতেন। তিনি ধনীর ঘরে জন্মাননি এবং  প্রকৃতপক্ষে সারাজীবনই তিনি দরিদ্র ছিলেন, কারণ শিষ্যদের তিনি যা শিক্ষা দিতেন সেজন্য তাদের কাছ থেকে কখনো অর্থ চাইতেন না। তিনি অর্থের জন্য নয়, জ্ঞানের প্রতি ভালোবাসার জন্যই শিক্ষা দিতেন।

Socrates lived in Athens, nearly 500 years before the birth of Christ. He was not born rich and indeed all his life he was poor, for he never asked his pupils to pay for what he taught them. He taught for the love of wisdom, not for money.

3. ভারতের ইতিহাসে অষ্টাদশ শতক একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ও বহু বিতর্কিত অধ্যায়। এই শতকের প্রথম দিকেই মোগল সাম্রাজ্যের বিশাল মহীরুহ প্রায় ধরাশায়ী, আর সেই সুযোগে ভারতবর্ষের বিভিন্ন প্রান্তে স্বাধীন কয়েকটি রাজ্যের উত্থান। আবার এই শতকেই মাঝামাঝি, পলাশীর পরে, ইংরেজরা বাংলার রাজনৈতিক ও অর্থনৈতিক ক্ষমতা কুক্ষিগত করে। একটি শতকে এত সব ঘটনাক্রম বিরল। তাই এই শতক নিয়ে বির্তকের শেষ নেই। ইরফান হাবিব, আতহার আলি, সতীশচন্দ্র প্রমুখের কাছে অষ্টাদশ শতক অবক্ষয়ের প্রতীক। তারা বারবার এই শতককে চিহ্নিত করেছেন ‘অন্ধকারের যুগ' হিসেবে।

In the history of India, 18th century is a very crucial and much controversial chapter. In the beginning of this century the great Mughal empire almost fell down, the taking this advantage few states in various parts of India emerged independent. Again in the middle of this very century, after Plassey, Britisher appropriated political and economical powers in Bengal. So many incidents happening in a century is rare. Therefore, there is no end to controversy for this century. According to Irfan Habib, Atohar Ali, Satish Chandra and others, 18th century is the symbol of degradation. They have repeatedly identified this century as a 'dark age.'
