Tribal Woman dubbed witch, lynched in Bengal

By staff reporter, 26 September, West Medinipur: A 74-year-old woman named Sambari Tudu was burnt alive in Pathardaha village, Salboni in West Medinipur District. The tribal woman was dragged from her house by some drunken men often a village court held a sitting and blamed her for the death of two children and a young man of 35 due to ailments. She was thrashed often being tied to a post and those drunken men set fire on her, the family members of Sambari Tudu were also tied with a rope by them, stated some witnesses.

         The incident came into light when the brother of Sambari Tudu complained to the local police station. “A police team went to the village and recovered the dead body. An investigation on” said Alok Rajoria, superintendent of police, West Medinipur. Those who were involved in this incident left the village, but soon they will be traced, a senior officer on investigation stated. Tension escalated that area. Chetan Tudu, the brother of accused has named all the culprits and want justice and plea for punishment to those.
                 
        Despite stringent laws against such medieval practices, branding, and killing people as witches remain ugly truth of rural India. Similar incidents of crime previously reported from the same district and strong actions were also taken by the administration. But the incident of Sambari Tudu again proved that the situation and mentality remain unchanged.
